By Sarla Donovan WHEN LARRISSA McEwin’s husband, Finn, found a seal pup at the top of Gebbies Pass, she wasn’t expecting it to spend the night in her bathroom. But that’s exactly what happened. The couple’s house is halfway between Teddington and Motukarara, several minutes drive along narrow, winding roads, so how the seal pup got there is a mystery. “It was there in the car park near the walking track, right near where we live. My husband called me up and said: ‘What do I do?’ It was a Friday evening, there was a storm arriving and there’s boy racers everywhere up there on a Friday.” She called the Department of Conservation, who asked if she was okay to have it for the night and return it to the beach the following day. “I was a bit surprised. I said sure – but how do you look after a seal? I didn’t have any fresh fish in the house. We opened a tin of tuna for it which it didn’t eat of course. It slept on the floor in the bathroom. It was a very good house guest, didn’t make much noise at all. We poked our heads in every now and then to check on it, and there were its wee eyes looking up at us – it was gorgeous! I’d love to have kept it.’’ •Turn to page 6

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK NOW THAT’S a nice story on the front page today about the seal pup the McEwin family rescued. Finn McEwin found it at the top of Gebbies Pass, took it home and his wife and family looked after it like one of their own. Great photos of it having a sleep and looking very much at home. How the pup got to the top of Gebbies Pass is a mystery – possibly someone dropped it off there or it could have simply lost its bearings. The seal stayed the night and was named Luseal – very catchy, before the pup was taken to Purau Beach and released. The McEwins last saw Luseal heading into deeper water. No doubt they’ll ponder for a long time what adventures Luseal will get up to. – Barry Clarke

Passengers face walk to board ferry By Sarla Donovan DIAMOND Harbour Ferry users won’t be able to be picked up or dropped off at the terminal once Lyttelton Port Company’s new staff car park is finished. Previously, ferry patrons used an informal area within the car park. However, this would not be possible once the new car park was finished due to space restraints. Diamond Harbour Community Association chairman Richard Suggate said he had written to LPC expressing concern at the change. In response, LPC project director for the new car park Mike Simmers told Mr Suggate pick-ups and drop-offs were not currently allowed “and will certainly not be allowed going forward.” “We have installed a sign on the bridge to remind people that the bridge is for port traffic and buses only. We have not overly enforced this to date – but will in the future,” he said. While direct stair access to Oxford St will be introduced as part of the changes, Mr Suggate said he was concerned at the lack of a designated parking

Preventing car access to the wharf would mean a longer walk for physically impaired people, Mr Suggate said. “Those with goods to drop off will either have to seek wharf access permission, or carry the goods from Norwich Quay.” Mr Suggate has written to the city council and Environment Canterbury asking for support to ensure “accessible public access” to the ferry is preserved.

The new car park will also reduce bus parking spaces from two to one. City council transport operations manager Aaron Haymes said, while the city council “aspired” to have a bus stop close to the ferry, it understood the development needs of LPC. “(This) might mean bus services are best operated from the closest bus stop on Norwich Quay.”

Mr Simmers said providing an extra bus parking space “wasn’t a good utilisation of the land area.” Ferry-users spoken to on Monday had mixed views on the changes. One thought it would make using the ferry more difficult, while another wasn’t concerned, saying they understood the needs of the port. Eighteen-year-old Freya Gale, of Diamond Harbour, said the current service “worked well.” Bus connections matched up and, on the occasions when she needed to be dropped off, she had “never had any trouble.” The Diamond Harbour Ferry terminal will eventually be relocated from its current location to the eastern end of the new Te Ana Marina. Bay Harbour News understands that shift will be eight to 10 years away. In Brief CRASH VICTIM NAMED The 55-year-old who died after his work truck crashed into two parked cars on College Pl, Lyttelton, has been named as Phillip David Collier. The Christchurch man suffered a medical event at about 10.30am on September 2 and died at the scene. No one else was injured. Lyttelton Fire Brigade chief fire officer Mark Buckley said Mr Collier had just pulled out of a driveway when the incident occurred. Man charged with multiple thefts

NOMINEE: After winning the Canterbury lifeguard of the year award in May, Tom Denman is now up for the national award later this month.

By Sarla Donovan A 48-YEAR-OLD man will appear for sentencing after a spate of thefts in Akaroa on August 27 and 28. The man was arrested last week and charged with multiple thefts, including a ute, two bicycles, a back-pack style vacuum cleaner, two VHF radios, about six wetsuits and seven life jackets from the Akaroa Boat Club, and various other items. He was driving the stolen ute in Linwood Ave last Monday when he was stopped by police and arrested.

He is scheduled to appear at the Christchurch District Court on October 10. Akaroa Police Senior Constable Tim Johnson said most of the stolen goods had since been recovered and returned to their owners. He said it was a timely reminder for people to make sure they kept their homes and cars locked. “In a place like this, crime is not high; people can get relaxed and it takes something like this to get them to do those things.”

Sumner lifesavers finalists in national excellence awards FOUR SUMNER surf lifesavers have been named as finalists at the national awards of excellence in Auckland. Tom Denman (lifeguard of the year), Kate Suter (volunteer of the year), Jonelle Quane (coach of the year) and Derek Shanks (official of the year) have all been

nominated for awards ahead of the ceremony on September 23. All four won the same respective awards at the Canterbury awards of excellence in May. Denman, who is a police officer, was part of a surf lifesaving crew which helped to recover

the body of Maureen Imrie, 73, who was killed when the vehicle her husband Bruce was driving crashed into the sea off Main Rd. Until joining the police last year, he had worked as a full-time lifeguard on opposite sides of the globe, spending four summers working in Poole, England.

News Shifting of boat shed to start soon By Sarla Donovan A PROJECT which has been years in the making has got the green light. Christchurch Yacht Club has secured city council funding of $240,000 towards a new boat shed, meaning the $1.17 million building can finally get underway. Construction is expected to start almost straight away. The new shed will be 5.5m further seaward, enlarging the space for a public walking and cyRichard cle route between Ineson it and the road from 1m to 4m. The city council grant was made possible through a legal agreement requiring the club to make adjoining decks and ramps accessible to the public. Located in Moncks Bay, the boat shed was damaged in the February 22, 2011, earthquake. Its rebuild has been complicated by several factors, including the coastal pathway which will eventually run behind the shed along the roadside edge. Originally built against the road, the pathway meant the

shed had to be shifted further seaward, incurring extra costs. The city council funding would go towards the replacement base of the new shed. Club commodore Richard Ineson said the project had been “complex” but was pleased they had persevered. Building would begin as soon as the contractor was ready, as resource consents and building permits have already been obtained. “We’ve had the contracts in place for two years,” Mr Ineson said. He estimated the work would take about three months to complete. The club has already been allocated $327,595 from the Coastal Pathway project, money which will contribute towards the extra costs associated with providing for the coastal pathway.

In Brief FIRE RESTORATION Two projects helping to restore vegetation after the Port Hills fire have been given $15,000 by the Selwyn Waihora Zone Committee. The Lansdowne Covenant Project will use a $5000 grant to re-establish and repair fences and native habitat on farmland. The Early Valley Fire Restoration Project received $10,000 to restore a native hillside gully and reduce sediment runoff into the Huritini/Halswell River. SKATE RAMP NOISE TEST A relocated temporary skate ramp in Sumner is a step closer after noise level tests required under the city council’s District Plan came back as acceptable. The Sumner Green and Skate Group is now preparing the resource consent application for the site on the corner of Nayland and Wakefield Sts.

Because it was late and a southerly front had just arrived, she was advised to keep the seal safe overnight and to release it in Lyttelton Harbour the next morning. The seal pup was in good condition, which indicated it had been weaned and was doing well.” On Sunday morning, Mrs McEwin took Luseal down to Purau Beach. “Finn carried the box;

we walked around the rocks and it hopped out and sat there, looking at us and looking at the water. Then it toddled off into the water and swam off. It was doing big twirls and lifting its flipper; it went right out into the harbour then swam back and looked at us, as if to say ‘thanks for having me.’ ”

Young mums thank Sumner people with beach clean-up

By Sarla Donovan A GROUP of young women from Kimihia Parents’ College helped clean up Scarborough Beach and the Esplanade yesterday. It’s their way of giving back to the community after Sumner families last month donated baby and pre-schooler gear to the students, many of whom are currently on benefits while they finish their schooling. Kimihia Parents’ College is a teen parent unit attached to Linwood College. It was set up to provide a learning environment for pregnant teenagers or teenagers aged 19 and under who are parents. Sumner woman Becky Ward helped set up the Family Share event, which took place last Monday at the old school hall in Sumner. The students came bearing cakes they had baked as a thank you and, when they saw the clothes and toys all laid out for them to see, “they were over the moon,” said Kimihia head teacher Diane Atkins. “They had a ball. We loaded up the vans and took it all home; they couldn’t wait to get home to show their children. It was a

NZ First will increase the minimum wage over three years to at least $20/hour and provide compensation for businesses through the taxation system. We will raise benefits to a living income level and build thousands of modest homes on smaller sections, for first home buyers to purchase over 25 years without needing a deposit. A DSC Government would use Reserve Bank credit, low interest and suspensory loans for people starting out. We are very concerned at the way the present Government has abandoned our families. Rock classics sure to be on Barnes’ set list By Bridget Rutherford

BIG NAME: Rock and roll legend Jimmy Barnes says he’s looking forward to headlining the next Selwyn Sounds. ​

JIMMY BARNES hasn’t decided what songs he will play at March’s Selwyn Sounds. He will choose on the day when he sees the crowd. “I get to a set and I have a look at the audience – what are they doing, are they having a good time? And I’ll pick the set accordingly,” he said. One thing’s for sure – he plans to “rock out” and give the crowd a good show. The legendary Aussie rocker will headline the day-long music festival at Lincoln Domain on March 3 alongside The Feelers, Mental as Anything, The Mockers, Stellar, The Narcs, The Ladykillers and The Warratahs. It follows this year’s inaugural event, which saw Jordan Luck Band, Mi-Sex, Dragon and other Kiwi heavyweights play in front of about 10,000 people. Barnes, who now lives in the Southern Highlands, New South Wales, said he couldn’t be sure if he had visited Lincoln before. But he enjoyed playing in small towns. It took him back to where he started as lead singer in Cold Chisel, he said. “I’m looking forward to it, it’s a beautiful part of the country,” he said.

“I like to support the area, especially after the earthquakes.” Barnes said he enjoyed visiting New Zealand and the “nob******t” people. “If I get the chance, I’ll buy a place.” When his music career began in the 1970s, he never imagined some of the songs would still be crowd favourites today, he said. Khe Sanh, which was recorded in 1976, was an example, he said. “When you get up and play it, you can see young and old and they’re all there singing it. The song is as relevant now as it was then. How it connects with people, it makes it all worth it.” And in spite of being one of the best selling Australian music rockers of all time, Barnes said he enjoyed a variety of genres. He was a big fan of Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Paul Rodgers, Stevie Marriott, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Finn and even Sia. “I had to sing Chandelier and I realised how well written the song is. I’m a big fan of hers.” Barnes, who changed his last name from Swan after his stepfather Reg Barnes, was born in Glasgow and emigrated to Adelaide as a five-year-old. Last year, he released his autobiography Working Class Boy, which told the tale of his child-

hood, growing up with violence and abuse, up until joining Cold Chisel. The next instalment, Working Class Man, will be released next month. Although he hasn’t decided exactly what songs he would play in Lincoln, he reckons classics such as Working Class Man, Khe Sanh and Flame Trees will be in the mix. “I know I want to play rock ’n’ roll, so probably a cross section of myself and Cold Chisel.” And it will be a real family affair. His kids, Jackie, Elly-May and EJ, and wife Jane will perform alongside him at Selwyn Sounds, with son-in-law Ben Rodgers, Danny Spencer, Lachlan Doley and Michael Hegarty. Barnes said he wasn’t sure whether he would be staying in Lincoln or for how long, but if so, he would likely be out and about looking for a nice place to eat. Your Local Views Fundraising is vital Spring brings out boaties in today’s schools MP for Port Hills Ruth Dyson reflects on the time and energy being put into school fundraisers I joined the sellout crowd at a fantastic fundraiser at Our Lady Star of the Sea School in Sumner recently. It was a brilliant evening and everyone had a thoroughly good night. The week before I went to the Somerfield School Craft fair which again provided a really good evening (and I won the raffle). And there was the recent barn dance for Redcliffs School – and Lyttelton Primary School’s Fashion show. Most of us just buy tickets and go along and have a great time at these fundraisers. But I did reflect on just how much work goes into organising them. Principals, teachers, support staff and parents do so much to raise the money to keep our schools working so well. Even with this massive fundraising, school donations are common.

Across the country, they range from $40 to $800 a year and then when you add in the cost of uniforms, field trips, social events, sporting equipment and stationery that can be up to $1000 per year as well. So a massive thank you to this small group of passionate people in each school who do so much to give our children the best possible education and the best experiences. They deserve a lot of thanks but they deserve better support as well. The relationship between central government and schools in funding needs to be restored. In last year’s Budget, the operational funding for schools was frozen for four years by the Government. That’s just ridiculous. It certainly hasn’t been matched by a freezing of all the costs that schools face. The importance of high quality education increases as the years go by and our world changes. We are so fortunate to have such an amazing group of people in front of our students every day. And so are our students. Thank you.

Lyttelton-based navigational safety officer Gary Manch is back from holiday and looking forward to getting back on the water with warmer spring weather on the horizon I am just back from a threeweek holiday in Thailand, complete with 35 deg C weather and lovely sunny days – paradise really. It was a tough time with all that swimming, eating and relaxing. I still don’t know how I coped. I would like to thank our harbourmaster, ‘cabin boy’, for his contributions to Bay Harbour News while I was away. I am sure you enjoyed his columns as much as I did when I returned to work and read them. I must admit, coming home to the tail-end of winter is not what I call fun. However, the good news is that the first day of spring has passed, so it can’t be all bad. With that comes the promise of fine weather and for all you boaties out there, the chance of getting back on to the water. Governors Bay to Lyttelton raced for 56th time MORE THAN 150 runners lined up for the 56th Governors Bay to Lyttelton Road Race on Saturday. The 10km race was run as a handicapped event, with runners given an estimated time which decided how many minutes after the first runners they would leave the start line at Governors Bay School. “It was a fantastic day for the event and everything went really well,” said organiser Lindsay Evans. The race included one competitor with a special historic connection to the event. New Brighton’s Peter Coughlan proved age is no barrier. The 72-year-old finished in a time of 1hr 8min 8sec. He ran in the first race in 1962. His time then was 32min 9sec. The former electrician and polytechnic tutor, who underwent major heart surgery in 2010, also runs marathons. The Canterbury Scholastic Surf team has been training hard over the winter in preparation for the national champs at Gisborne in October. Local surfers representing include Thomas Harcourt, Jordan Sparrow, Caspar McCormick and Estella Hungerford. Local surfer Lucy Temoananui represented New Zealand at the ISA World SUP and

Paddleboarding Championship in Denmark last week, helping the team to a bronze medal overall. The event was held in Vorupor on the north-west coast of Denmark. The area is promoted as the “cold Hawaii” but I’m not so sure about that as the waves weren’t great. Lucy surfed well winning her first round heat and eventually finishing in 13th place. Surf conditions were tricky with strong onshore messy waves. As we move into spring, we should see an increase in windy conditions, more nor’westers and onshore north-easterlies. This is the time of year for short lived north swells (good for the Breakwater and Taylors) and good-sized south swells (good for Kaikoura and Banks Peninsula). The water temperature is still cool at only 9 deg C but this will gradually increase over the next six weeks. See you in the soup.

IT MAY have been a long wet winter but it’s been one of the best winters for surf in many years for Christchurch. Consistent east and southeasterly swells and offshore winds have created great waves on all the local beaches for the past three months. However, there has been a notable lack of southerly swells this winter with the great Southern Ocean swell machine very quiet. This has meant our south facing coasts and the big wave breaks in the Catlins have been dormant, in fact the entire Pacific has noticed the lack of surf. Even the Hawaiians are complaining of their worst South Pacific swell season in many years. Hawaii receives a lot of its summer time waves from storms that track below New Zealand. You can ride a southerly swell here in New Zealand and then jump on a plane and chase it all
